Where do you snowboard? Just out at the ski hill where its socially acceptable, or do you branch out and take it to the streets? The nature and history of snowboarding don't lend themselves to being confined to one area under a strict set of rules. There is a growing number of riders who are branching out from what normal seems to be and are becoming more than just "Weekend snowboarders"

In the same way this line of thought applies to so many peoples views of religion, Just at church where its socially acceptable, or in the streets and outside of church away from what is familiar and easy? The nature and history of religion doesn't lend itself to being confined to one area under a strict set of rules. There is a growing number of individuals who are branching out from what normal seems to be and are becoming more than just "Weekend Christians." What does it mean to step outside of our comfort zone and not just do what is easy but do what we are compelled and called to do.

Do you have any older film cameras tucked away in your home? Are they collecting dust on a shelf or packed away in a box somewhere? If that's the case then TlangPhoto is here to help, we are looking for donations of film cameras and other older gear. Not looking to donate? We will purchase your gear from you as well. The whole drive behind this is to get these older cameras out of the dark and into the hands of young and aspiring photographers. At the same time we are looking to get film to those of you who have film cameras but don't have the means to shoot film. (access to dark room, film, and scanners).

So go dig out those old boxes and drag out those cameras you are willing to sell or donate to us. Any donations can be dropped off locally or picked up by myself if you live in the Alexandria-Central MN area. If you live outside of the Alexandria area we will gladly pay for postage and shipping charges for any donations you wish to send in.

Eye Fi

Last week I got a great deal on some Eye-Fi cards and as many of you may know I hands down recommend them to anyone who owns a camera. In fact I stand behind them enough to offer a few of there 4GB cards for sale to anyone who is thinking of seeing what Eye Fi can do for you.

The new cards not only let you transfer pictures wirelessly to your computer but also let you transfer your photos directly to your I phone I pad or Android device. This has saved me a lot of time and effort when i'm away from home. I want you, the people who read my blog to share the Eye-Fi fun so if you leave your comments below maybe we can hook you up.

Zeiss Ikon circa. 1950

I just picked this medium format Zeiss Ikon at the beginning of the season, it shoots Medium format film (6x6cm). After a roll is finished it gets developed in the dark room/basement then usually either loaded into the enlarger to make some prints, or in this case sent off to a good friend of mine to be scanned into digital files.

Everything is manual control on this camera and even when its folded up it still takes up a large chunk of space the image quality from this camera is spot on though, the only down side being the large amount of lens flair cause by its lack of lens coating. But for a camera produced in the 50's you can't complain.

A great and practical gift, one piece of advice I always try to give people is that if you make an effort to bring your camera with you it will always pay off, so stop storing you camera in a separate bag and make your camera bag the one you grab when you head out the door for the day. A bag like this allows you to keep your camera and all your other personal items.

One memory card never seems to be enough, In my bag I always have extra memory cards because being prepared always pays off. Its good to look for brands like Sandisk Lexar or Kingston when purchasing memory cards.

This one tips the scales on the under $25 dollar range but its an amazing gift that can't be passed up, its a battery powered instant photo printer and it requires no ink! Much like the Polaroid film that this is based off of all the work is done through the paper that makes up your photo. In today's world where everything is instant and digital its very cool to see something like this at such a great price.

Every time i come across this photo I always take a moment, the color the raindrops frozen in mid air. This picture reminds me so much of that day and how good it felt. It worked out really well even though this is a 100mm f6.3 lens from 60 years back

The Three Trees
Once upon a mountain top, three little trees stood and dreamed of what they wanted to become when they grew up. The first little tree looked up at the stars and said: " I want to hold treasure. I want to be covered with gold and filled with precious stones. I'll be the most beautiful treasure chest in the world!" The second little tree looked out at the small stream trickling by on it's way to the ocean. " I want to be traveling mighty waters and carrying powerful kings. I'll be the strongest ship in the world! The third little tree looked down into the valley below where busy men and women worked in a busy town. I don't want to leave the mountain top at all. I want to grow so tall that when people stop to look at me they'll raise their eyes to heaven and think of God. I will be the tallest tree in the world.

Years, passed. The rain came, the sun shone and the little trees grew tall. One day three wood cutters climbed the mountain. The first wood cutter looked at the first tree and said, "This tree is beautiful. It is perfect for me." With a swoop of his shining ax, the first tree fell. "Now I shall make a beautiful chest, I shall hold wonderful treasure!" the first tree said.

The second wood cutter looked at the second tree and said, "This tree is strong. It's perfect for me." With a swoop of his shining ax, the second tree fell. "Now I shall sail mighty waters!" thought the second tree. " I shall be a strong ship for mighty kings!"

The third tree felt her heart sink when the last wood cutter looked her way. She stood straight and tall and pointed bravely to heaven. But the wood cutter never even looked up. "Any kind of tree will do for me." He muttered. With a swoop of his shining ax, the third tree fell.

The first tree rejoiced when the wood cutter brought her to a carpenter's shop. But the carpenter fashioned the tree into a feed box for animals. The once beautiful tree was not covered with gold, or treasure. She was coated with saw dust and filled with hay for hungry farm animals. The second tree smiled when the wood cutter took her to a shipyard, but no mighty sailing ship was made that day. Instead the once strong tree was hammered and awed into a simple fishing boat. She was too small and too weak to sail to an ocean, or even a river, instead she was taken to a little lake. The third tree was confused when the wood cutter cut her into strong beams and left her in a lumberyard. "What happened?" The once tall tree wondered. " All I ever wanted was to stay on the mountain top and point to God..."

Many days and nights passed. The three trees nearly forgot their dreams. But one night, golden starlight poured over the first tree as a young woman placed her newborn baby in the feed box. "I wish I could make a cradle for him." Her husband whispered. The mother squeezed his hand and smiled as the starlight shone on the smooth and sturdy wood. " This manger is beautiful." She said. And suddenly the first tree knew he was holding the greatest treasure in the world.

One evening a tired traveler and his friends crowded into the old fishing boat. The traveler fell asleep as the second tree quietly sailed out into the lake. Soon a thundering and a thrashing storm arose. The little tree shuddered. She new she did not have the strength to carry so many passengers safely through the wind and the rain. The tired man awoke. He stood up, stretched out his hand, and said, "Peace." The storm stopped as quickly as it had begun. And suddenly the second tree knew he was carrying the king of heaven and earth.

One Friday morning, the third tree was startled when her beams were yanked from the forgotten wood pile. She flinched as she was carried through an angry jeering crowd. She shuddered when soldiers nailed a man's hand to her. She felt ugly and harsh and cruel. But on Sunday morning, when the sun rose and the earth trembled with joy beneath her, the third tree knew that God's love had changed everything. It had made the third tree strong. And every time people thought of the third tree, they would think of God. That was better than being the tallest tree in the world.

Strength & Pacifism

I'm sure there have been many times you have heard the phrase "an eye for an eye" or "turn the other cheek" these to saying carry very different meanings but are found on the same page in the bible. Raising the question which one is right? Do we go through life showing pacifism by turning the other cheek when we are harmed by some action or do we stand up and fight against what has caused us that harm? Sometimes the idea of standing up and fighting back can be hurtful itself.

Think of it this way everyone loves candy, but eat to much and you can develop cavities which can cause you harm. But all you need to do is go to the dentist and take a hurt to correct it. The same thing holds true for so many things in our own lives, things we do harm us but for whatever reason we let it go unchecked because we aren't willing to take that hurt to correct it. Taking a stand and fighting back is needed sometimes to correct something that is harming us or others. We are made to be strong individuals and there are times when pacifism just won't do.

I've got friends in different places

I've traveled to some pretty amazing places, but my cameras have been to even more amazing places. Its all part of how I choose to live my life, I've always tried to put a large amount of trust in the people I call my friends. Those friends have been everywhere, from the snowy mountains of Colorado to the sandy beaches of Barbados.

Some of you who know a lot about my gear know that the price is a little higher than an ordinary camera. But its not about the price, Money is temporary and you definitely cant take it with you when your gone. What you can do though is use the resources you do have wisely and grow in trust and understanding with the people closest to you and also gain new friends by going outside your comfort zone and giving them a chance to prove themselves. Keep this in mind the next time someone comes to you for a favor and instead of playing it safe consider taking a chance on someone.
